Rare and fine Chinoiserie coffee table by the celebrated Drexel furniture company, founded in 1903 in Drexel, North Carolina. This exceptional piece is hand decorated in polychrome lacquer with a traditional central scene portraying elegantly attired Chinese ladies engaged in pastimes within an elegant setting. Scattered calligraphic characters and cartouches offer a narrative verse and artist information.
Below the top is a golden band of Greek Key / Fret decoration, with further gold decorations on the lower apron and legs. Each end of the top has an elegant upturned ? - which also makes it easy to move around. Similar to a 'tray table' in style.
Signed on the underside with the Drexel Heritage Factory label as shown.
Age is vintage 1950s - 1970s. This piece is the perfect size for placing in front of a settee or sofa, and the height is just right.
Condition is very good with some minor nicks and wear to lacquer finish in places. It has been well looked after.
