At over 200 years old these rare directoire chairs are in remarkably good condition with beautiful color and patina. Hand carved from solid fruitwood and constructed using old world pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery. Fine design incorporating neoclassic elements including bellflower wreaths carved on the back, delicate fluting throughout, and elegant splayed legs. Ready for your own upholstery material -- If desired the bottom upholstery could be saved (in exquisite condition) and a complimentary fabric installed on the back only.
No markings.
Condition is very good with very minor restoration/stabilization. No major issues.
Circa 1800.
Each is 21" wide x 22" deep x 34 1/2" high. The seat is 21" wide x 19" deep. About 18" from floor. Very comfortable.

The Directoire or Directory style takes its name from the period 1795–1799 when France was ruled by a government of Directors – the Directory. Directory style was not so much an independent style in itself, but rather a transitionary style between that of Louis XVI and the Consular and Empire styles.
