A masterpiece of carved colonial design from the Aesthetic movement. We were delighted to find this antique Colonial Carved Wooden Treasure / Dowery Chest or Trunk.
A compact, domed, lift-top trunk/chest or dowery chest which is deeply carved in exquisite detail on all 4 sides and the top.
The carving is of a naturalistic design portraying scenes of everyday life in a tropical setting. The wave/rippled carving on the legs possible represents flowing water/rivers.
We have tried to capture the beauty of the carving in the last photos along with the wrought iron work.
A hand made piece including the wrought iron fittings.
No markings found.
Condition is very good. The lock is present with a key however the fitting that the bolt would slide into is missing so the chest cannot be locked.
