Grotto furniture was popular among the European nobility who built incredible shell-encrusted pavilions and grottos during the 18th and 19th Centuries. In the late 19th century, Pauly et Cie was the leading maker of Grotto furniture in Venice. This matched pair is an exquisite example in the original dark walnut finish, hand carved in the manner of Pauly Et Cie.  Each has a scallop shell back to scallop shell seat connected with stylised dolphin arms
No markings.
Condition is very good with expected wear to finish in places, and honest repairs including replaced screws & stabilization.
Circa 1880.
Each is 20" wide x 22" deep x 36" high. Seat is 19 1/2" deep x 15" wide x 19 1/2" high.
About 20 pounds each.
