A very unique and sizeable handmade Chinese piece. This dovetailed case or Scholars box contains 2 good size drawers and a "secret compartment" below. The drawers are concealed by a carved reticulated panel with an auspicious goldfish & turtle motif. Opposing dragons chasing the flaming pearl form the handle at top.
A whimsical leaf-form element sits front and center on the top as well. Finished in a brown/orange lacquer.
No markings.
Late Qing. Circa 1900.
Condition is very good for age. Minor surface wear and loss throughout.
