Antique Chinese Four Panel Room Divider or Screen of the Four Seasons With Calligraphy
Take a minute to look at this beautiful early 20th. century four panel Chinese black or very dark brown lacquer screen. The front is hand decorated with Chinese figures, ornate trees and landscapes representing the Four Seasons, with associated flowers and different birds in the lower sections.
Carved in high relief soapstone, jadeite, onyx and mother of pearl. The reverse side is hand painted with decorative early style calligraphy, gold colour that translates as longevity - in many forms.
The photos do not even begin to show the skilled carving especially on the foliage detail.
Folding screens of this kind originally stem from the Ming Period for the Chinese market and were also made as a European export product. Soapstone in all its colours lends itself well to ornamental carving; as can be seen in this fine example. Minor age related wear.
A rare find from the estate of an interior designer in Chicago in the 1960's.
