Antique Chinese hand made Brides dowry chest - Late 19th Century with aged rich warm deep burgundy red & umber colours with gold highlights, hand painted scenes and fretwork.
A fantastic accent piece for the home.
The fretwork and carved panels are traditional Chinese scenes, providing a chance for one to look back in history. This Chinese dowry chest is solid wood, probably pine, accented with black painted murals and motifs under the varnish/lacquer.
The front of the piece is removable and easily lifts out. The compartment was meant for the brides clothing and treasures. fIt has one shelf
The top of the removable panel is a complex fret work pattern. The panels below this area mainly floral. The side panels are hand carved, cherry blossoms and exotic birds.
The section where the carrying pole would have been is topped by four charming foo dogs/fu lions - one on each corner.
The back has a hand painted scene portraying nobles in a pavilion area/garden.
Nowadays one could place a flat screen TV on this, use it as a bar as shown, a storage cabinet, a console, book shelf - it really does have many uses in the home.
