Antique Chinese Black Lacquer & Jade Screen / Room Divider, Garden Pavilion & Noble Ladies
Ornate antique Chinese four panel screen featuring an idyllic ornamental garden scene with hand crafted high quality jade and semi precious stone figures around a pavilion set on a black lacquer background with gilt and silver border highlights. Groups of traditionally clothed female courtesans/figures with a wise woman standing in front of the Jade Pavilion, carriages and jade trees surround the scene. The reverse is decorated with simple hand painted gold foliage of four traditional styles - blossoms & bamboo. The level of work in older screens is far superior to that of ones made more recently. Bought in Singapore by us, in the 1980's, originally from China, Circa 1950's.

Calligraphy poem on pavilion pillars is about the Spring, the light airy breezes, the young ladies in the gardens, dancing. An oft told tale from days past.
Good condition - minor wear consistent with age and use - small chips and lacquer losses around some edges/feet
