Antoine-Louis Barye was born in Paris. He was the earliest and most famous sculptor of the French animalier school. As well as models of domestic dog breeds, his subjects included wild animal subjects and he used the animals in the Jardin des Plantes zoo in Paris as his models. He studied the techniques of sculpture under Baron Francoise- Joseph Bosio, who in turn had studied under Canova. His first success came when he exhibited the 'Tiger devouring a Gavial' at the French Salon in 1831. This led to a long and successful career.
