Large and very rare example of a Nyonya / Straits Chinese Famille Jaune, Peranakan-style jardiniere or planter on original matching stand. Hexagonal form with foo lion handles.
The exquisite jardiniere has 6 panels with black floral borders painted with scenes of interiors with people alternated with naturalistic settings with exotic birds and colourful & varied flowers. The yellow stand is decorated on the top with auspicious orange bats against a jade green background.
A beautiful piece.
The Nyonya Straits people originally came from China and settled in Singapore around the 1500's bringing their own culture with them.
No markings.
Condition is very good with no damage or repair. Typical manufacturing flaws are seen.
Acquired from a collector of Chinese porcelains who has amassed such over the last 40 years.
This is the only one we have ever seen like this - and it is a gorgeous example of such.

Nyonya Baba or Peranakan people are descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to the Malay Archipelago back in the 15th century. Generally used to define the Straits-born Chinese to differentiate Chinese people who are born in China or in the Malay Archipelago.
Straits-Chinese were defined as those born or living in the Straits Settlements: a British colonial construct of Penang, Malacca and Singapore constituted in 1826. Straits Chinese were not considered Baba Nyonya unless they displayed certain Sino-Malay syncretic attributes, in terms of attire worn, food, spoken language, choice of education, preferred career choices, choice of religion and loyalties.
