Rare and exquisite Antique Japanese Arita Porcelain Censer with Foo Dog Handles from the early Meiji (1868-1912) or possibly late Edo period (1600-1868).
The censer is archaic in design with a reticulated cover to allow for the incense, 2 square green decorated handles on the main body, a aubergine/grey foo dog lid handle, and 4 angled feet. Hand painted in rich enamels, the 4 sides with scenic medallions portraying a pair of birds and floral patterns painted over a white glaze.
The main body painted with white scroll designs over a yellow glaze. The rest of the details painted in other beautiful glazes including aubergine, green, blue, orange and pink. The top rim border and feet have interesting geometric designs.
Signed on the underside with the Arita Fuku (happiness) hallmark hand painted in dark brown over a blue square-shaped seal.
Condition is very good with exception of two small chips to corners of lid (see photos).
Circa 1860 - 1880.
A beautiful piece worthy of any collection, as well as being a tastefully decorative and eye catching ornament.
